Clare, Sole Canadian at Sebring Shootout
14 year old Mackenzie Clare, was the sole Canadian representative at the Skip Barber Karting Shootout in Sebring, Florida December 27, 28, 29, 30, 2009.
Being one of only 36 drivers selected from five countries, Clare was looking forward to the opportunity of experiencing four full days of training at this historic race track, home to the 12 hours of Sebring.
"It's a very interesting track", said the Barrie, Ontario native. "It took some adjustment with the entire course having no elevation changes, and having to adjust between asphalt and concrete road surfaces."
Mac's consistent approach and systematic attention to detail paid off over the course of the four days, and when all the stats were tallied, Clare had finished in the 'top three' of his rookie group of twelve. More impressively, the young racer was continuing to slash his best times by a full second per lap.
Although Clare was one of the youngest drivers at Sebring, it did not seem to phase him, as "Speed TV's" Bob Varsha interviewed Mac between on-track sessions. Varsha asked Clare about whether his young age plays a factor in this challenge, Mac said "I don't think it matters whether you are fifteen or twenty-five, you can have the same level of skill if you practice enough and get the seat time."
The Grade 9 student from Innisdale Secondary School in Barrie, ON, Canada is currently finalizing his 2010 racing schedule and will be making announcements shortly.
Mackenzie will continue his testing and development under the guidance of Brian Graham, Team Principle of BGR/TLM Team Grote Racing, Canada's Premier Formula Car ladder development team. The youngster was signed to a long-term Junior Driver Development contract in 2008.
